IELTS Speaking Sample Answers

You may have already known that IELTS Speaking comprises three parts all together—introduction and familiar topics (part 1), individual long run (part 2), and two-way discussion. Because of the different natures of answering each of the parts, IELTS Speaking tests are often considered as difficult but this article ends months of anxiety surrounding IELTS speaking. However, the sample answers are for giving you an idea of what the questions and answers are like so that you can know the process of answering on your own.

1. Study/ work

Study

Where do you study?
I have been pursuing a bachelor’s in English at East-West University. I am in the 6th semester; maybe it will take another couple of years for me to complete my graduation from there. It is pleasing to be studying at this university as it offers ample opportunities to expand my knowledge.

What do you study?
I study English literature. Although I was not into it initially, I started loving this subject and have developed a passion for this. I believe, given the shortage of quality English teachers, this subject has a bright prospect in the Bangladeshi job market.

Why did you choose to study this subject?
Honestly speaking, I was initially not a big fan of this subject as I was keen to pursue my bachelor’s in engineering. I picked this subject because it was advised by my father. But now, I have started enjoying studying this subject.

Is it a popular subject in your country?
Well, I consider so. A good reason is that English is an international language and that this subject has a high market value when it comes to career building in Bangladesh.

Do you like your subject?
Yes, undoubtedly, I do. Studying this subject allows me to be more open-minded, teaches me the history of the English language, and helps me think creatively. Therefore, I believe I like this a lot.

Do you prefer to study in the mornings or in the afternoon?
Well, I feel mornings are the best time to study because I can easily concentrate on studying at that time and I can complete more lessons within a limited time in the morning.

Work

Where do you work?
I work for a multinational company based in Dhaka. It is an IT-based company. I have been working there for a few years.

Do you like your job?
Yes absolutely, I do. I find it a rewarding job as the policies are employee-friendly here. And the administration cares about our mental health a lot. Salary increments and promotion systems are also awesome here. So, I guess this is a dream job for me.

Do you miss being a student?
Nothing compares to student life. It’s one of the best phases of life. I thoroughly enjoyed the student life and do miss being a student. It’s a life where we only have one major duty: study.

If you had a chance, would you change your job?
Umm, that’s tricky. I have not thought about it before. Basically, depends on the situation. Suppose, I have got a far better job, I might change. But usually, I don’t have any plan to change my job in the next few years.

Do you plan to continue with your job in the future?
Obviously, I do. I surmise the work environment in my workplace is pretty impressive. Everyone is as helpful as amicable. Therefore, I apparently do not have any plan to change my job in the near future.

2. Hometown/ home

Hometown

Where is your hometown?
I’m from Comilla which is not far from the capital city of Bangladesh. It’s a place of natural beauty and tranquility. I love the neighborhood there. It was great to have been brought up there.

Is it a big city or a small place?
This is a massive city with a barrage of modern amenities. In addition, my native town has got everything starting from prominent schools, universities, and mega shopping malls to good health care facilities.

How long have you been living there?
I was born and brought up in my hometown. I shifted to Dhaka in pursuit of quality education and fast-paced life. So I have not been living there at present but I visit every now and then to see my neighbors.

How often do you visit your hometown?
As my whole family is residing in Dhaka currently, I visit my hometown once in a while. But as soon as I get any holidays or summer breaks, I try to visit this picturesque place.

3. Family

How often do you meet with your family members?
I live with my family parents and siblings. So I meet them every now and then. I feel blessed to find them around me. They take care of me like no other. And I get extra peace being surrounded by my family.

Do you want to live with your family in the future?
Of course, I would love to. Nevertheless, I don’t know what’s in my fate in the future. We cannot live with the family when we work or study in remote parts. If I can manage to live with my family, it would be my absolute pleasure.

Are you close to all of your family members?
Umm, actually not. Some are closer than others. I don’t have the same intimacy with all of my family members. For example, I feel more comfortable sharing everything with my elder sister. It’s solely because she understands me better than anybody else.

4. Friends

Do you have friends?
Yes, I have numerous friends. I enjoy hanging out with them. I strongly believe that my life has been way nicer than it used to be after I met some of my truly awesome friends.

How often do you talk to your friends?
I talk to my friends very frequently. I don’t know if I am a good communicator but I try to keep in touch with all of them quite often. I believe no matter how good a relationship is, it can break down unless I nurture it.

What do you think makes people have a long friendship?
There are a series of aspects that contribute to a long-lasting relationship. However, I opine, that honesty, integrity, trust and compromise are some of the things that make a relationship sustainable.

Is it beneficial to have similar interests in a friendship?
Basically, I don’t believe so. Taste and preferences vary. That’s why I welcome diversity and I believe people can be good friends even though they don’t have shared interests.

How do people make friends?
People may make friends in a range of ways. Such as they may befriend people through schools, workplaces or even via different clubs.

Do you like to spend time with friends or alone?
Well, it depends, I often prefer spending time with friends. Then again when I remain frustrated for any reason, I would rather stay alone and take time to heal.

5. Gifts

Do you like having gifts?
Yes, absolutely I do. I become delighted after I receive gifts. It makes me instantly cheerful. I always love gifts from people around me.

Do you give expensive gifts?
As a matter of fact, sometimes I give expensive gifts, and sometimes I lean towards reasonable ones. It completely depends on the situation when I am thinking of giving gifts. If it’s someone very special to whom I am going to give the gift, my budget would be high.

What do you give others as gifts?
I mostly love electronic gadgets to pick as gifts. However, I love gifting toys to children. I think gifts are a great way to convey our appreciation and love to our nearest and dearest ones.

What kind of gifts are popular in your country?
Most commonly, traditional clothes are chosen as gifts in our country. They include Panjabi for males and Saari for females.

6. Food

What is your favorite food?
The food I like most is Biriyani. It’s often cooked when any party is arranged such as a birthday party, wedding party, etc. This tastes so delicious that many of the people of our country like this.

Are there any foods you dislike?
Actually, there are not any particular food that I cannot stand. However, I try to avoid overly spicy foods just to keep my body fit.

Is fast food getting popular in recent times?
Without any doubt, fast food is becoming popular these days. The young generation, in particular, is obsessed with fast food. I suppose the fundamental reason behind that is the taste. Fast foods are usually very tasty although they stand in the way of a healthy lifestyle.

7. Hobbies

Do you have a hobby?
Of course, I have hobbies. While my favorite pastime is playing cricket, I love watching football on TV and listening to music in my spare time. Music feeds my soul and playing cricket and football revives me a lot.

Do you think hobbies should be shared?
Yes, I do. I think our enjoyments stimulate once we share our hobbies. From my perspective, if we share hobbies, we find an extra bit of happiness which ultimately boosts our energy.

Shopping

Do you like shopping?
I am afraid, I am not a big fan of shopping. However, I love windows shopping sometimes when I am free. It feels great to stay updated with contemporary fashions and prices.

Do you compare prices when you shop?
Yes, I do that often. I suppose I am good at bargaining. I mostly compare prices before I purchase something. It helps me to buy products at very reasonable prices.

Is it difficult for you to make a choice when you shop?
Yes sometimes, but not always. For example, if I am buying a t-shirt, it’s a piece of cake for me to pick the best one. Conversely, if I am buying a shirt, it will be difficult for me to single out the best one easily.

Reading

Do you love reading?
Yes certainly. Who doesn’t love it? It creates a superb platform for us to enrich our knowledge and explore the world. It makes us more thoughtful and creative.

What do you love to read in your spare time?
I am a huge fan of fiction. Fiction widens my repertoire and makes me more creative. It teaches me to think globally. So, fictions are on top of my list when it comes to reading.

Fishing

Why do people go fishing?
It could be for several reasons. Some go for pursuing their hobby. And some go fishing as part of their profession. I think both of them are quite impressive. It’s so very pleasing to catch fresh fish.

Where can you see fish?
Fish can be seen in the river, in ponds, and in canals. When I go to the grocery stores, I can also see fishes there though they are not always fresh.

Swimming/ water sport

Do you like swimming?
Yes, I have been keen on swimming since childhood. My father is the one who taught me how to swim. I suppose it is a good exercise to keep our body fit and often takes our mind off work.

How often do you swim?
I swim thrice a week in our university pool. I wish I could do it more but my busy schedule stands in my way.

Is swimming good for children, in your opinion?
I happen to believe swimming is good for them. Children need it not only to keep their bodies fit but also to save their life in a situation like drowning in water arises.

Gardening

Do you love gardening?
Of course, gardening is one of my favorite pastime activities. It gives me great pleasure when I do gardening. The whole environment becomes wonderful. The smells of flowers make me so happy.

Do most people in your country love it?
Yes, I think so. I have many people gardening on their balconies, rooftop and in other places too. People in our country value it very much. I guess this plays a fantastic role in making our environment nicer.

On which occasion do people gift flowers in your country?

Teaching

How do you see teaching?
To me, teaching is the art of making learning pleasant, easy and regular. Teaching is a noble profession, and on top of it, it is a highly respected profession where I live. Although teachers were not paid sufficiently, the scenario has changed recently.

Would you like a job as a teacher?
I would definitely like it. Nothing is happier than assisting young generations in building their career and thus making our country’s development wheel moving. But I guess, I will not be happy with teaching in a primary school as there is more to managing children’s chaos in the classroom than teaching. I would love to teach in a high school or college instead.

8. Internet

Do you use the internet very much?
Yes, I am a frequent user of the internet. I cannot go without the internet. It makes lots of tasks easier for me. I imagine life would have been a lot harder without the internet. I can save much time for the sake of the internet.

How did you learn to use the internet?
When I was in 10th grade, one of my friends taught me how to open Gmail and how to use google. Since then, I have learned to use the internet very quickly.

What you don’t like about the internet?
I find the addiction to the internet very annoying. Once I start using the internet for any crucial need, I subconsciously spend more time on it though it is often unnecessary. So this temptation is what I dislike very much about the internet.

To express your opinion, you can use the following phrases.
• I believe corruption can be reduced by giving Transparency International of Bangladesh full freedom.
• I think Bangladesh will be stronger economically in a short time.
• I feel Rita is the most genius girl in our class.
• In my opinion teaching is a noble profession.
• From my point of view Messi is the best player.
• As far as I am concerned Bangladesh cricket is improving fast.
• It seems to me that Bangladesh will win today.
• It appears to me that Australia will win the World Cup next year.
• I tend to believe that Justin Trudeau is the best president in the present world.
• I happen to believe that I can do it if my parents support me.

To deal with questions with conditionals, you can use the techniques described below.

Example questions and answers:
What do you do if you have a headache?
On condition that I am suffering from a headache, I’ll immediately take a painkiller.

What will you do if the weather’s fine this weekend?
As long as the sun is out, I’ll go to the beach.

Provided that there are no clouds outside, I’ll head off to the beach.

What would you do if you lost your job?
Saying that I no longer have a job, I’ll bring forward my plan to start a business.
